Sūrah 70
al-Maʿārij
The Ways of Ascent · 44 verses
Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥeem
- 1A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happenسَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
- 2To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventerلِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
- 3[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascentمِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
- 4The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand yearsتَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
- 5So be patient with gracious patienceفَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
- 6Indeed, they see it [as] distantإِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
- 7But We see it [as] nearوَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
- 8On the Day the sky will be like murky oilيَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
- 9And the mountains will be like woolوَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
- 10And no friend will ask [anything of] a friendوَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
- 11They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his childrenيُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
- 12And his wife and his brotherوَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
- 13And his nearest kindred who shelter himوَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
- 14And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save himوَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
- 15No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell]كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
- 16A remover of exteriorsنَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
- 17It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
- 18And collected [wealth] and hoardedوَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
- 19Indeed, mankind was created anxious۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
- 20When evil touches him, impatientإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
- 21And when good touches him, withholding [of it]وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
- 22Except the observers of prayerإِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
- 23Those who are constant in their prayerٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
- 24And those within whose wealth is a known rightوَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
- 25For the petitioner and the deprivedلِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
- 26And those who believe in the Day of Recompenseوَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
- 27And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lordوَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
- 28Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safeإِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
- 29And those who guard their private partsوَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
- 30Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamedإِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
- 31But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressorsفَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
- 32And those who are to their trusts and promises attentiveوَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
- 33And those who are in their testimonies uprightوَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
- 34And those who [carefully] maintain their prayerوَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
- 35They will be in gardens, honoredأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
- 36So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad]فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
- 37[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groupsعَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
- 38Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasureأَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
- 39No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they knowكَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
- 40So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are ableفَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
- 41To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdoneعَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
- 42So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promisedفَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
- 43The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hasteningيَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
- 44Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promisedخَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
