بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Surah 96 — Al-Alaq
- 1اقْرَأْiq'raReadبِاسْمِbi-is'miin (the) nameرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordالَّذِيalladhīthe One Whoخَلَقَkhalaqacreated
- 2خَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdالْإِنْسَانَl-insānamanمِنْminfromعَلَقٍʿalaqina clinging substance
- 3اقْرَأْiq'raReadوَرَبُّكَwarabbukaand your Lordالْأَكْرَمُl-akramu(is) the Most Generous
- 4الَّذِيalladhīThe One Whoعَلَّمَʿallamataughtبِالْقَلَمِbil-qalamiby the pen
- 5عَلَّمَʿallamaTaughtالْإِنْسَانَl-insānamanمَاmāwhatلَمْlamnotيَعْلَمْyaʿlamhe knew
- 6كَلَّاkallāNay!إِنَّinnaIndeedالْإِنْسَانَl-insānamanلَيَطْغَىlayaṭghāsurely transgresses
- 7أَنْanBecauseرَءَاهُraāhuhe sees himselfاسْتَغْنَىis'taghnāself-sufficient
- 8إِنَّinnaIndeedإِلَىilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordالرُّجْعَىl-ruj'ʿā(is) the return
- 9أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenالَّذِيalladhīthe one whoيَنْهَىyanhāforbids
- 10عَبْدًاʿabdanA slaveإِذَاidhāwhenصَلَّىṣallāhe prays
- 11أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنْinifكَانَkānahe isعَلَىʿalāuponالْهُدَىl-hudā[the] guidance
- 12أَوْawOrأَمَرَamarahe enjoinsبِالتَّقْوَىbil-taqwā[of the] righteousness
- 13أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنْinifكَذَّبَkadhabahe deniesوَتَوَلَّىwatawallāand turns away
- 14أَلَمْalamDoes notيَعْلَمْyaʿlamhe knowبِأَنَّbi-annathatاللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَرَىyarāsees
- 15كَلَّاkallāNay!لَئِنْla-inIfلَمْlamnotيَنْتَهِyantahihe desistsلَنَسْفَعًاlanasfaʿansurely We will drag himبِالنَّاصِيَةِbil-nāṣiyatiby the forelock
- 16نَاصِيَةٍnāṣiyatinA forelockكَاذِبَةٍkādhibatinlyingخَاطِئَةٍkhāṭi-atinsinful
- 17فَلْيَدْعُfalyadʿuThen let him callنَادِيَهُnādiyahuhis associates
- 18سَنَدْعُsanadʿuWe will callالزَّبَانِيَةَl-zabāniyatathe Angels of Hell
- 19كَلَّاkallāNay!لَاlā(Do) notتُطِعْهُtuṭiʿ'huobey himوَاسْجُدْwa-us'judBut prostrateوَاقْتَرِبْwa-iq'tariband draw near (to Allah)
