بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah 68 — Al-Qalam

  1. 1نٓnoonNunوَالْقَلَمِwal-qalamiBy the penوَمَاwamāand whatيَسْطُرُونَyasṭurūnathey write
  2. 2مَاNotأَنْتَantayou (are)بِنِعْمَةِbiniʿ'matiby (the) Graceرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordبِمَجْنُونٍbimajnūnina madman
  3. 3وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedلَكَlakafor youلَأَجْرًاla-ajransurely (is) a rewardغَيْرَghayrawithoutمَمْنُونٍmamnūninend
  4. 4وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed youلَعَلَىlaʿalāsurely (are)خُلُقٍkhuluqin(of) a moral characterعَظِيمٍʿaẓīmingreat
  5. 5فَسَتُبْصِرُfasatub'ṣiruSo soon you will seeوَيُبْصِرُونَwayub'ṣirūnaand they will see
  6. 6بِأَيِّيكُمُbi-ayyikumuWhich of youالْمَفْتُونُl-maftūnu(is) the afflicted one
  7. 7إِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour LordهُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowingبِمَنْbimanof (he) whoضَلَّḍallahas strayedعَنْʿanfromسَبِيلِهِsabīlihiHis wayوَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowingبِالْمُهْتَدِينَbil-muh'tadīnaof the guided ones
  8. 8فَلَاfalāSo (do) notتُطِعِtuṭiʿiobeyالْمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnathe deniers
  9. 9وَدُّواwaddūThey wishلَوْlawthatتُدْهِنُtud'hinuyou should compromiseفَيُدْهِنُونَfayud'hinūnaso they would compromise
  10. 10وَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتُطِعْtuṭiʿobeyكُلَّkullaeveryحَلَّافٍḥallāfinhabitual swearerمَهِينٍmahīninworthless
  11. 11هَمَّازٍhammāzinDefamerمَشَّاءٍmashāingoing aboutبِنَمِيمٍbinamīminwith malicious gossip
  12. 12مَنَّاعٍmannāʿinA preventerلِلْخَيْرِlil'khayriof (the) goodمُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressorأَثِيمٍathīminsinful
  13. 13عُتُلٍّʿutullinCruelبَعْدَbaʿdaafterذَلِكَdhālika(all) thatزَنِيمٍzanīminutterly useless
  14. 14أَنْanBecauseكَانَkāna(he) isذَاdhāa possessorمَالٍmālin(of) wealthوَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children
  15. 15إِذَاidhāWhenتُتْلَىtut'lāare recitedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himءَايَاتُنَاāyātunāOur Versesقَالَqālahe saysأَسَاطِيرُasāṭīruStoriesالْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)
  16. 16سَنَسِمُهُsanasimuhuWe will brand himعَلَىʿalāonالْخُرْطُومِl-khur'ṭūmithe snout
  17. 17إِنَّاinnāIndeed Weبَلَوْنَاهُمْbalawnāhumhave tried themكَمَاkamāasبَلَوْنَاbalawnāWe triedأَصْحَابَaṣḥāba(the) companionsالْجَنَّةِl-janati(of) the gardenإِذْidhwhenأَقْسَمُواaqsamūthey sworeلَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاlayaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruitمُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(in the) morning
  18. 18وَلَاwalāAnd notيَسْتَثْنُونَyastathnūnamaking exception
  19. 19فَطَافَfaṭāfaSo there cameعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon itطَائِفٌṭāifuna visitationمِنْminfromرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordوَهُمْwahumwhile theyنَائِمُونَnāimūnawere asleep
  20. 20فَأَصْبَحَتْfa-aṣbaḥatSo it becameكَالصَّرِيمِkal-ṣarīmias if reaped
  21. 21فَتَنَادَوْاfatanādawAnd they called one anotherمُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(at) morning
  22. 22أَنِaniThatاغْدُواigh'dūGo earlyعَلَىʿalātoحَرْثِكُمْḥarthikumyour cropإِنْinifكُنْتُمْkuntumyou wouldصَارِمِينَṣārimīnapluck (the) fruit
  23. 23فَانْطَلَقُواfa-inṭalaqūSo they wentوَهُمْwahumwhile theyيَتَخَافَتُونَyatakhāfatūnalowered (their) voices
  24. 24أَنْanThatلَاNotيَدْخُلَنَّهَاyadkhulannahāwill enter itالْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon youمِسْكِينٌmis'kīnunany poor person
  25. 25وَغَدَوْاwaghadawAnd they went earlyعَلَىʿalāwithحَرْدٍḥardindeterminationقَادِرِينَqādirīnaable
  26. 26فَلَمَّاfalammāBut whenرَأَوْهَاra-awhāthey saw itقَالُواqālūthey saidإِنَّاinnāIndeed weلَضَالُّونَlaḍāllūna(are) surely lost
  27. 27بَلْbalNay!نَحْنُnaḥnuWeمَحْرُومُونَmaḥrūmūna(are) deprived
  28. 28قَالَqālaSaidأَوْسَطُهُمْawsaṭuhum(the) most moderate of themأَلَمْalamDid notأَقُلْaqulI tellلَكُمْlakumyouلَوْلَاlawlāWhy notتُسَبِّحُونَtusabbiḥūnayou glorify (Allah)
  29. 29قَالُواqālūThey saidسُبْحَانَsub'ḥānaGlory beرَبِّنَاrabbinā(to) our Lord!إِنَّاinnāIndeed weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereظَالِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers
  30. 30فَأَقْبَلَfa-aqbalaThen approachedبَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of themعَلَىʿalātoبَعْضٍbaʿḍinothersيَتَلَاوَمُونَyatalāwamūnablaming each other
  31. 31قَالُواqālūThey saidيَاوَيْلَنَاyāwaylanāO woe to us!إِنَّاinnāIndeed weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereطَاغِينَṭāghīnatransgressors
  32. 32عَسَىʿasāPerhapsرَبُّنَاrabbunāour Lordأَنْan[that]يُبْدِلَنَاyub'dilanāwill substitute for usخَيْرًاkhayrana betterمِنْهَاmin'hāthan itإِنَّاinnāIndeed weإِلَىilātoرَبِّنَاrabbināour Lordرَاغِبُونَrāghibūnaturn devoutly
  33. 33كَذَلِكَkadhālikaSuchالْعَذَابُl-ʿadhābu(is) the punishmentوَلَعَذَابُwalaʿadhābuAnd surely the punishmentالْءَاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafterأَكْبَرُakbaru(is) greaterلَوْlawifكَانُواkānūtheyيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
  34. 34إِنَّinnaIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteousعِنْدَʿindawithرَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordجَنَّاتِjannāti(are) Gardensالنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) Delight
  35. 35أَفَنَجْعَلُafanajʿaluThen will We treatالْمُسْلِمِينَl-mus'limīnathe Muslimsكَالْمُجْرِمِينَkal-muj'rimīnalike the criminals
  36. 36مَاWhatلَكُمْlakum(is) for youكَيْفَkayfaHowتَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūna(do) you judge
  37. 37أَمْamOrلَكُمْlakum(is) for youكِتَابٌkitābuna bookفِيهِfīhiwhereinتَدْرُسُونَtadrusūnayou learn
  38. 38إِنَّinnaThatلَكُمْlakumfor youفِيهِfīhithereinلَمَاlamāwhatتَخَيَّرُونَtakhayyarūnayou choose
  39. 39أَمْamOrلَكُمْlakum(do) you haveأَيْمَانٌaymānunoathsعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāfrom usبَالِغَةٌbālighatunreachingإِلَىilātoيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayالْقِيَامَةِl-qiyāmati(of) the ResurrectionإِنَّinnaThatلَكُمْlakumfor youلَمَاlamā(is) whatتَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūnayou judge
  40. 40سَلْهُمْsalhumAsk themأَيُّهُمْayyuhumwhich of themبِذَلِكَbidhālikafor thatزَعِيمٌzaʿīmun(is) responsible
  41. 41أَمْamOrلَهُمْlahum(do) they haveشُرَكَاءُshurakāupartnersفَلْيَأْتُواfalyatūThen let them bringبِشُرَكَائِهِمْbishurakāihimtheir partnersإِنْinifكَانُواkānūthey areصَادِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful
  42. 42يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيُكْشَفُyuk'shafuwill be uncoveredعَنْʿanfromسَاقٍsāqinthe shinوَيُدْعَوْنَwayud'ʿawnaand they will be calledإِلَىilātoالسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrateفَلَاfalābut notيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey will be able
  43. 43خَاشِعَةًkhāshiʿatanHumbledأَبْصَارُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyesتَرْهَقُهُمْtarhaquhumwill cover themذِلَّةٌdhillatunhumiliationوَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedكَانُواkānūthey wereيُدْعَوْنَyud'ʿawnacalledإِلَىilātoالسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrateوَهُمْwahumwhile theyسَالِمُونَsālimūna(were) sound
  44. 44فَذَرْنِيfadharnīSo leave Meوَمَنْwamanand whoeverيُكَذِّبُyukadhibudeniesبِهَذَاbihādhāthisالْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthiStatementسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْsanastadrijuhumWe will progressively lead themمِنْminfromحَيْثُḥaythuwhereلَاnotيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know
  45. 45وَأُمْلِيwa-um'līAnd I will give respiteلَهُمْlahumto themإِنَّinnaIndeedكَيْدِيkaydīMy planمَتِينٌmatīnun(is) firm
  46. 46أَمْamOrتَسْءَلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask themأَجْرًاajrana paymentفَهُمْfahumso theyمِنْminfromمَغْرَمٍmaghramin(the) debtمُثْقَلُونَmuth'qalūna(are) burdened
  47. 47أَمْamOrعِنْدَهُمُʿindahumu(is) with themالْغَيْبُl-ghaybuthe unseenفَهُمْfahumso theyيَكْتُبُونَyaktubūnawrite it
  48. 48فَاصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patientلِحُكْمِliḥuk'mifor (the) decisionرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَكُنْtakunbeكَصَاحِبِkaṣāḥibilike (the) companionالْحُوتِl-ḥūti(of) the fishإِذْidhwhenنَادَىnādāhe called outوَهُوَwahuwawhile heمَكْظُومٌmakẓūmun(was) distressed
  49. 49لَوْلَاlawlāIf notأَنْanthatتَدَارَكَهُtadārakahuovertook himنِعْمَةٌniʿ'matuna Favorمِنْminfromرَبِّهِrabbihihis Lordلَنُبِذَlanubidhasurely he would have been thrownبِالْعَرَاءِbil-ʿarāionto (the) naked shoreوَهُوَwahuwawhile heمَذْمُومٌmadhmūmun(was) blamed
  50. 50فَاجْتَبَاهُfa-ij'tabāhuBut chose himرَبُّهُrabbuhuhis Lordفَجَعَلَهُfajaʿalahuand made himمِنَminaofالصَّالِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous
  51. 51وَإِنْwa-inAnd indeedيَكَادُyakāduwould almostالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُواkafarūdisbelieveلَيُزْلِقُونَكَlayuz'liqūnakasurely make you slipبِأَبْصَارِهِمْbi-abṣārihimwith their eyesلَمَّاlammāwhenسَمِعُواsamiʿūthey hearالذِّكْرَl-dhik'rathe Messageوَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaand they sayإِنَّهُinnahuIndeed heلَمَجْنُونٌlamajnūnun(is) surely mad
  52. 52وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwait (is)إِلَّاillābutذِكْرٌdhik'runa Reminderلِلْعَالَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
