بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah 53 — An-Najm

  1. 1وَالنَّجْمِwal-najmiBy the starإِذَاidhāwhenهَوَىhawāit goes down
  2. 2مَاNotضَلَّḍallahas strayedصَاحِبُكُمْṣāḥibukumyour companionوَمَاwamāand notغَوَىghawāhas he erred
  3. 3وَمَاwamāAnd notيَنْطِقُyanṭiquhe speaksعَنِʿanifromالْهَوَىl-hawāthe desire
  4. 4إِنْinNotهُوَhuwaitإِلَّاillā(is) exceptوَحْيٌwaḥyuna revelationيُوحَىyūḥārevealed
  5. 5عَلَّمَهُʿallamahuHas taught himشَدِيدُshadīduthe (one) mightyالْقُوَىl-quwā(in) power
  6. 6ذُوdhūPossessor of soundnessمِرَّةٍmirratinPossessor of soundnessفَاسْتَوَىfa-is'tawāAnd he rose
  7. 7وَهُوَwahuwaWhile heبِالْأُفُقِbil-ufuqi(was) in the horizonالْأَعْلَىl-aʿlāthe highest
  8. 8ثُمَّthummaThenدَنَاdanāhe approachedفَتَدَلَّىfatadallāand came down
  9. 9فَكَانَfakānaAnd wasقَابَqāba(at) a distanceقَوْسَيْنِqawsayni(of) two bow-(lengths)أَوْaworأَدْنَىadnānearer
  10. 10فَأَوْحَىfa-awḥāSo he revealedإِلَىilātoعَبْدِهِʿabdihiHis slaveمَاwhatأَوْحَىawḥāhe revealed
  11. 11مَاNotكَذَبَkadhabaliedالْفُؤَادُl-fuāduthe heartمَاwhatرَأَىraāit saw
  12. 12أَفَتُمَارُونَهُafatumārūnahuThen will you dispute with himعَلَىʿalāaboutمَاwhatيَرَىyarāhe saw
  13. 13وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyرَءَاهُraāhuhe saw himنَزْلَةًnazlatan(in) descentأُخْرَىukh'rāanother
  14. 14عِنْدَʿindaNearسِدْرَةِsid'rati(the) Lote Treeالْمُنْتَهَىl-muntahā(of) the utmost boundary
  15. 15عِنْدَهَاʿindahāNear itجَنَّةُjannatu(is the) Gardenالْمَأْوَىl-mawā(of) Abode
  16. 16إِذْidhWhenيَغْشَىyaghshācoveredالسِّدْرَةَl-sid'ratathe Lote Treeمَاwhatيَغْشَىyaghshācovers
  17. 17مَاNotزَاغَzāghaswervedالْبَصَرُl-baṣaruthe sightوَمَاwamāand notطَغَىṭaghāit transgressed
  18. 18لَقَدْlaqadCertainlyرَأَىraāhe sawمِنْminofءَايَاتِāyāti(the) Signsرَبِّهِrabbihi(of) his Lordالْكُبْرَىl-kub'rāthe Greatest
  19. 19أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuSo have you seenاللَّاتَl-lātathe Latوَالْعُزَّىwal-ʿuzāand the Uzza
  20. 20وَمَنَوةَwamanataAnd Manatالثَّالِثَةَl-thālithatathe thirdالْأُخْرَىl-ukh'rāthe other
  21. 21أَلَكُمُalakumuIs for youالذَّكَرُl-dhakaruthe maleوَلَهُwalahuand for Himالْأُنْثَىl-unthāthe female
  22. 22تِلْكَtil'kaThisإِذًاidhanthenقِسْمَةٌqis'matun(is) a divisionضِيزَىḍīzāunfair
  23. 23إِنْinNotهِيَhiyatheyإِلَّاillā(are) exceptأَسْمَاءٌasmāonnamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَاsammaytumūhāyou have named themأَنْتُمْantumyouوَءَابَاؤُكُمْwaābāukumand your forefathersمَاnotأَنْزَلَanzalahas Allah sent downاللَّهُl-lahuhas Allah sent downبِهَاbihāfor itمِنْminanyسُلْطَانٍsul'ṭāninauthorityإِنْinNotيَتَّبِعُونَyattabiʿūnathey followإِلَّاillāexceptالظَّنَّl-ẓanaassumptionوَمَاwamāand whatتَهْوَىtahwādesireالْأَنْفُسُl-anfusuthe(ir) soulsوَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyجَاءَهُمْjāahumhas come to themمِنْminfromرَبِّهِمُrabbihimutheir Lordالْهُدَىl-hudāthe guidance
  24. 24أَمْamOrلِلْإِنْسَانِlil'insāni(is) for manمَاwhatتَمَنَّىtamannāhe wishes
  25. 25فَلِلَّهِfalillahiBut for Allahالْءَاخِرَةُl-ākhiratu(is) the lastوَالْأُولَىwal-ūlāand the first
  26. 26وَكَمْwakamAnd how manyمِنْminofمَلَكٍmalakin(the) Angelsفِيinالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensلَاnotتُغْنِيtugh'nīwill availشَفَاعَتُهُمْshafāʿatuhumtheir intercessionشَيْئًاshayananythingإِلَّاillāexceptمِنْminafterبَعْدِbaʿdiafterأَنْan[that]يَأْذَنَyadhanaAllah has given permissionاللَّهُl-lahuAllah has given permissionلِمَنْlimanfor whomيَشَاءُyashāuHe willsوَيَرْضَىwayarḍāand approves
  27. 27إِنَّinnaIndeedالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoلَا(do) notيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieveبِالْءَاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafterلَيُسَمُّونَlayusammūnasurely they nameالْمَلَائِكَةَl-malāikatathe Angelsتَسْمِيَةَtasmiyataname(s)الْأُنْثَىl-unthā(of) female
  28. 28وَمَاwamāAnd notلَهُمْlahumfor themبِهِbihiabout itمِنْminanyعِلْمٍʿil'minknowledgeإِنْinNotيَتَّبِعُونَyattabiʿūnathey followإِلَّاillābutالظَّنَّl-ẓanaassumptionوَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedالظَّنَّl-ẓanathe assumptionلَا(does) notيُغْنِيyugh'nīavailمِنَminaagainstالْحَقِّl-ḥaqithe truthشَيْئًاshayananything
  29. 29فَأَعْرِضْfa-aʿriḍSo turn awayعَنْʿanfromمَنْman(him) whoتَوَلَّىtawallāturns awayعَنْʿanfromذِكْرِنَاdhik'rināOur Reminderوَلَمْwalamand notيُرِدْyuridhe desiresإِلَّاillāexceptالْحَيَوةَl-ḥayatathe lifeالدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
  30. 30ذَلِكَdhālikaThatمَبْلَغُهُمْmablaghuhum(is) their sumمِنَminaofالْعِلْمِl-ʿil'miknowledgeإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordهُوَhuwa(is) He (Who)أَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنْbiman(he) whoضَلَّḍallastraysعَنْʿanfromسَبِيلِهِsabīlihiHis Pathوَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنِbimani(he) whoاهْتَدَىih'tadāis guided
  31. 31وَلِلَّهِwalillahiAnd for Allahمَا(is) whateverفِي(is) inالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَمَاwamāand whateverفِي(is) inالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthلِيَجْزِيَliyajziyathat He may recompenseالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَسَاءُواasāūdo evilبِمَاbimāwith whatعَمِلُواʿamilūthey have doneوَيَجْزِيَwayajziyaand recompenseالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَحْسَنُواaḥsanūdo goodبِالْحُسْنَىbil-ḥus'nāwith the best
  32. 32الَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيَجْتَنِبُونَyajtanibūnaavoidكَبَائِرَkabāiragreatالْإِثْمِl-ith'misinsوَالْفَوَاحِشَwal-fawāḥishaand the immoralitiesإِلَّاillāexceptاللَّمَمَl-lamamathe small faultsإِنَّinnaindeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordوَاسِعُwāsiʿu(is) vastالْمَغْفِرَةِl-maghfirati(in) forgivenessهُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowing about youبِكُمْbikum(is) most knowing about youإِذْidhwhenأَنْشَأَكُمْansha-akumHe produced youمِنَminafromالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَإِذْwa-idhand whenأَنْتُمْantumyou (were)أَجِنَّةٌajinnatunfetusesفِيinبُطُونِbuṭūni(the) wombsأُمَّهَاتِكُمْummahātikum(of) your mothersفَلَاfalāSo (do) notتُزَكُّواtuzakkūascribe purityأَنْفُسَكُمْanfusakum(to) yourselvesهُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنِbimani(he) whoاتَّقَىittaqāfears
  33. 33أَفَرَءَيْتَafara-aytaDid you seeالَّذِيalladhīthe one whoتَوَلَّىtawallāturned away
  34. 34وَأَعْطَىwa-aʿṭāAnd gaveقَلِيلًاqalīlana littleوَأَكْدَىwa-akdāand withheld
  35. 35أَعِنْدَهُaʿindahuIs with himعِلْمُʿil'mu(the) knowledgeالْغَيْبِl-ghaybi(of) the unseenفَهُوَfahuwaso heيَرَىyarāsees
  36. 36أَمْamOrلَمْlamnotيُنَبَّأْyunabbahe was informedبِمَاbimāwith whatفِي(was) inصُحُفِṣuḥufi(the) Scripturesمُوسَىmūsā(of) Musa
  37. 37وَإِبْرَاهِيمَwa-ib'rāhīmaAnd Ibrahimالَّذِيalladhīwhoوَفَّىwaffāfulfilled
  38. 38أَلَّاallāThat notتَزِرُtaziruwill bearوَازِرَةٌwāziratuna bearer of burdensوِزْرَwiz'ra(the) burdenأُخْرَىukh'rā(of) another
  39. 39وَأَنْwa-anAnd thatلَيْسَlaysais notلِلْإِنْسَانِlil'insānifor manإِلَّاillāexceptمَاwhatسَعَىsaʿāhe strives (for)
  40. 40وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatسَعْيَهُsaʿyahuhis strivingسَوْفَsawfawill soonيُرَىyurābe seen
  41. 41ثُمَّthummaThenيُجْزَاهُyuj'zāhuhe will be recompensed for itالْجَزَاءَl-jazāathe recompenseالْأَوْفَىl-awfāthe fullest
  42. 42وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatإِلَىilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordالْمُنْتَهَىl-muntahā(is) the final goal
  43. 43وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that Heهُوَhuwa[He]أَضْحَكَaḍḥakamakes (one) laughوَأَبْكَىwa-abkāand makes (one) weep
  44. 44وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that Heهُوَhuwa[He]أَمَاتَamātacauses deathوَأَحْيَاwa-aḥyāand gives life
  45. 45وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that Heخَلَقَkhalaqacreatedالزَّوْجَيْنِl-zawjaynithe pairsالذَّكَرَl-dhakarathe maleوَالْأُنْثَىwal-unthāand the female
  46. 46مِنْminFromنُطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina dropإِذَاidhāwhenتُمْنَىtum'nāit is emitted
  47. 47وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon Himالنَّشْأَةَl-nashata(is) bringing forthالْأُخْرَىl-ukh'rāanother
  48. 48وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that Heهُوَhuwa[He]أَغْنَىaghnāenrichesوَأَقْنَىwa-aqnāand suffices
  49. 49وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that Heهُوَhuwa[He]رَبُّrabbu(is the) Lordالشِّعْرَىl-shiʿ'rā(of) the Sirius
  50. 50وَأَنَّهُwa-annahuAnd that HeأَهْلَكَahlakadestroyedعَادًاʿādanAadالْأُولَىl-ūlāthe first
  51. 51وَثَمُودَwathamūdāAnd Thamudفَمَاfamāso notأَبْقَىabqāHe spared
  52. 52وَقَوْمَwaqawmaAnd (the) peopleنُوحٍnūḥin(of) NuhمِنْminbeforeقَبْلُqablubeforeإِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُواkānūthey wereهُمْhumthey wereأَظْلَمَaẓlamamore unjustوَأَطْغَىwa-aṭghāand more rebellious
  53. 53وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَwal-mu'tafikataAnd the overturned citiesأَهْوَىahwāHe overthrew
  54. 54فَغَشَّاهَاfaghashāhāSo covered themمَاwhatغَشَّىghashācovered
  55. 55فَبِأَيِّfabi-ayyiThen which (of)ءَالَاءِālāithe Favorsرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordتَتَمَارَىtatamārāwill you doubt
  56. 56هَذَاhādhāThisنَذِيرٌnadhīrun(is) a warnerمِنَminafromالنُّذُرِl-nudhurithe warnersالْأُولَىl-ūlāthe former
  57. 57أَزِفَتِazifatiHas approachedالْءَازِفَةُl-āzifatuthe Approaching Day
  58. 58لَيْسَlaysaNot isلَهَاlahāfor itمِنْminbesidesدُونِdūnibesidesاللَّهِl-lahiAllahكَاشِفَةٌkāshifatunany remover
  59. 59أَفَمِنْafaminThen ofهَذَاhādhāthisالْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthistatementتَعْجَبُونَtaʿjabūnayou wonder
  60. 60وَتَضْحَكُونَwataḍḥakūnaAnd you laughوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَبْكُونَtabkūnaweep
  61. 61وَأَنْتُمْwa-antumWhile youسَامِدُونَsāmidūnaamuse (yourselves)
  62. 62فَاسْجُدُواfa-us'judūSo prostrateلِلَّهِlillahito Allahوَاعْبُدُواwa-uʿ'budūand worship (Him)
