Surah 49 — Al-Hujuraat

1. 1يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO (you who)الَّذِينَalladhīna(O) you whoءَامَنُواāmanūbelieveلَاlā(Do) notتُقَدِّمُواtuqaddimūput (yourselves) forwardبَيْنَbaynabefore Allahيَدَيِyadayibefore Allahاللَّهِl-lahibefore Allahوَرَسُولِهِwarasūlihiand His Messengerوَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqūand fearاللَّهَl-lahaAllahإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahسَمِيعٌsamīʿun(is) All-HearerعَلِيمٌʿalīmunAll-Knower
2. 2يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO (you who)الَّذِينَalladhīna(O) you whoءَامَنُواāmanūbelieveلَاlā(Do) notتَرْفَعُواtarfaʿūraiseأَصْوَاتَكُمْaṣwātakumyour voicesفَوْقَfawqaaboveصَوْتِṣawti(the) voiceالنَّبِيِّl-nabiyi(of) the Prophetوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَجْهَرُواtajharūbe loudلَهُlahuto himبِالْقَوْلِbil-qawliin speechكَجَهْرِkajahrilike (the) loudnessبَعْضِكُمْbaʿḍikum(of) some of youلِبَعْضٍlibaʿḍinto othersأَنْanlestتَحْبَطَtaḥbaṭabecome worthlessأَعْمَالُكُمْaʿmālukumyour deedsوَأَنْتُمْwa-antumwhile youلَاlā(do) notتَشْعُرُونَtashʿurūnaperceive
3. 3إِنَّinnaIndeedالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoيَغُضُّونَyaghuḍḍūnalowerأَصْوَاتَهُمْaṣwātahumtheir voicesعِنْدَʿinda(in) presenceرَسُولِrasūli(of the) Messenger of Allahاللَّهِl-lahi(of the) Messenger of Allahأُولَئِكَulāikathoseالَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the onesامْتَحَنَim'taḥanaAllah has testedاللَّهُl-lahuAllah has testedقُلُوبَهُمْqulūbahumtheir heartsلِلتَّقْوَىlilttaqwāfor righteousnessلَهُمْlahumFor themمَغْفِرَةٌmaghfiratun(is) forgivenessوَأَجْرٌwa-ajrunand a rewardعَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat
4. 4إِنَّinnaIndeedالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoيُنَادُونَكَyunādūnakacall youمِنْminfromوَرَاءِwarāibehindالْحُجُرَاتِl-ḥujurātithe private chambersأَكْثَرُهُمْaktharuhummost of themلَاlā(do) notيَعْقِلُونَyaʿqilūnaunderstand
5. 5وَلَوْwalawAnd ifأَنَّهُمْannahumtheyصَبَرُواṣabarūhad been patientحَتَّىḥattāuntilتَخْرُجَtakhrujayou came outإِلَيْهِمْilayhimto themلَكَانَlakānacertainly it would beخَيْرًاkhayranbetterلَهُمْlahumfor themوَاللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahغَفُورٌghafūrun(is) Oft-ForgivingرَحِيمٌraḥīmunMost Merciful
6. 6يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believeالَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believeءَامَنُواāmanūO you who believeإِنْinIfجَاءَكُمْjāakumcomes to youفَاسِقٌfāsiquna wicked personبِنَبَإٍbinaba-inwith informationفَتَبَيَّنُواfatabayyanūinvestigateأَنْanlestتُصِيبُواtuṣībūyou harmقَوْمًاqawmana peopleبِجَهَالَةٍbijahālatinin ignoranceفَتُصْبِحُواfatuṣ'biḥūthen you becomeعَلَىʿalāoverمَاmāwhatفَعَلْتُمْfaʿaltumyou have doneنَادِمِينَnādimīnaregretful
7. 7وَاعْلَمُواwa-iʿ'lamūAnd knowأَنَّannathatفِيكُمْfīkumamong youرَسُولَrasūla(is the) Messenger of Allahاللَّهِl-lahi(is the) Messenger of AllahلَوْlawIfيُطِيعُكُمْyuṭīʿukumhe were to obey youفِيfīinكَثِيرٍkathīrinmuchمِنَminaofالْأَمْرِl-amrithe matterلَعَنِتُّمْlaʿanittumsurely you would be in difficultyوَلَكِنَّwalākinnabutاللَّهَl-lahaAllahحَبَّبَḥabbabahas endearedإِلَيْكُمُilaykumuto youالْإِيمَانَl-īmānathe Faithوَزَيَّنَهُwazayyanahuand has made it pleasingفِيfīinقُلُوبِكُمْqulūbikumyour heartsوَكَرَّهَwakarrahaand has made hatefulإِلَيْكُمُilaykumuto youالْكُفْرَl-kuf'radisbeliefوَالْفُسُوقَwal-fusūqaand defianceوَالْعِصْيَانَwal-ʿiṣ'yānaand disobedienceأُولَئِكَulāikaThoseهُمُhumu(are) theyالرَّاشِدُونَl-rāshidūnathe guided ones
8. 8فَضْلًاfaḍlanA Bountyمِنَminafrom Allahاللَّهِl-lahifrom Allahوَنِعْمَةًwaniʿ'matanand favorوَاللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-KnowerحَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise
9. 9وَإِنْwa-inAnd ifطَائِفَتَانِṭāifatānitwo partiesمِنَminaamongالْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believersاقْتَتَلُواiq'tatalūfightفَأَصْلِحُواfa-aṣliḥūthen make peaceبَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themفَإِنْfa-inBut ifبَغَتْbaghatoppressesإِحْدَاهُمَاiḥ'dāhumāone of themعَلَىʿalāonالْأُخْرَىl-ukh'rāthe otherفَقَاتِلُواfaqātilūthen fightالَّتِيallatīone whichتَبْغِيtabghīoppressesحَتَّىḥattāuntilتَفِيءَtafīait returnsإِلَىilātoأَمْرِamri(the) commandاللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahفَإِنْfa-inThen ifفَاءَتْfāatit returnsفَأَصْلِحُواfa-aṣliḥūthen make peaceبَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween themبِالْعَدْلِbil-ʿadliwith justiceوَأَقْسِطُواwa-aqsiṭūand act justlyإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahيُحِبُّyuḥibbulovesالْمُقْسِطِينَl-muq'siṭīnathose who act justly
10. 10إِنَّمَاinnamāOnlyالْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believersإِخْوَةٌikh'watun(are) brothersفَأَصْلِحُواfa-aṣliḥūso make peaceبَيْنَbaynabetweenأَخَوَيْكُمْakhawaykumyour brothersوَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqūand fear Allahاللَّهَl-lahaand fear Allahلَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you mayتُرْحَمُونَtur'ḥamūnareceive mercy
11. 11يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believeالَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believeءَامَنُواāmanūO you who believeلَاlā(Let) notيَسْخَرْyaskharridiculeقَوْمٌqawmuna peopleمِنْmin[of]قَوْمٍqawmin(another) peopleعَسَىʿasāperhapsأَنْanthatيَكُونُواyakūnūthey may beخَيْرًاkhayranbetterمِنْهُمْmin'humthan themوَلَاwalāand (let) notنِسَاءٌnisāonwomenمِنْmin[of]نِسَاءٍnisāin(other) womenعَسَىʿasāperhapsأَنْanthatيَكُنَّyakunnathey may beخَيْرًاkhayranbetterمِنْهُنَّmin'hunnathan themوَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتَلْمِزُواtalmizūinsultأَنْفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselvesوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَنَابَزُواtanābazūcall each otherبِالْأَلْقَابِbil-alqābiby nicknamesبِئْسَbi'saWretched isالِاسْمُl-s'muthe nameالْفُسُوقُl-fusūqu(of) disobedienceبَعْدَbaʿdaafterالْإِيمَانِl-īmānithe faithوَمَنْwamanAnd whoeverلَمْlam(does) notيَتُبْyatubrepentفَأُولَئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseهُمُhumutheyالظَّالِمُونَl-ẓālimūna(are) the wrongdoers
12. 12يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believeالَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believeءَامَنُواāmanūO you who believeاجْتَنِبُواij'tanibūAvoidكَثِيرًاkathīranmuchمِنَminaofالظَّنِّl-ẓanithe assumptionإِنَّinnaIndeedبَعْضَbaʿḍasomeالظَّنِّl-ẓaniassumptionإِثْمٌith'mun(is) sinوَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتَجَسَّسُواtajassasūspyوَلَاwalāand (do) notيَغْتَبْyaghtabbackbiteبَعْضُكُمْbaʿḍukumsome of youبَعْضًاbaʿḍan(to) othersأَيُحِبُّayuḥibbuWould likeأَحَدُكُمْaḥadukumone of youأَنْantoيَأْكُلَyakulaeatلَحْمَlaḥma(the) fleshأَخِيهِakhīhi(of) his brotherمَيْتًاmaytandeadفَكَرِهْتُمُوهُfakarih'tumūhuNay, you would hate itوَاتَّقُواwa-ittaqūAnd fear Allahاللَّهَl-lahaAnd fear Allahإِنَّinnaindeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahتَوَّابٌtawwābun(is) Oft-ReturningرَحِيمٌraḥīmunMost Merciful
13. 13يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO mankindالنَّاسُl-nāsuO mankindإِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weخَلَقْنَاكُمْkhalaqnākumcreated youمِنْminfromذَكَرٍdhakarina maleوَأُنْثَىwa-unthāand a femaleوَجَعَلْنَاكُمْwajaʿalnākumand We made youشُعُوبًاshuʿūbannationsوَقَبَائِلَwaqabāilaand tribesلِتَعَارَفُواlitaʿārafūthat you may know one anotherإِنَّinnaIndeedأَكْرَمَكُمْakramakum(the) most noble of youعِنْدَʿindanearاللَّهِl-lahiAllahأَتْقَاكُمْatqākum(is the) most righteous of youإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-KnowerخَبِيرٌkhabīrunAll-Aware
14. 14قَالَتِqālatiSayالْأَعْرَابُl-aʿrābuthe BedouinsءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believeقُلْqulSayلَمْlamNotتُؤْمِنُواtu'minūyou believeوَلَكِنْwalākinbutقُولُواqūlūsayأَسْلَمْنَاaslamnāWe have submittedوَلَمَّاwalammāand has not yetيَدْخُلِyadkhulienteredالْإِيمَانُl-īmānuthe faithفِيfīinقُلُوبِكُمْqulūbikumyour heartsوَإِنْwa-inBut ifتُطِيعُواtuṭīʿūyou obeyاللَّهَl-lahaAllahوَرَسُولَهُwarasūlahuand His Messengerلَاlānotيَلِتْكُمْyalit'kumHe will deprive youمِنْminofأَعْمَالِكُمْaʿmālikumyour deedsشَيْئًاshayananythingإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahغَفُورٌghafūrun(is) Oft-ForgivingرَحِيمٌraḥīmunMost Merciful
15. 15إِنَّمَاinnamāOnlyالْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believersالَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those whoءَامَنُواāmanūbelieveبِاللَّهِbil-lahiin Allahوَرَسُولِهِwarasūlihiand His Messengerثُمَّthummathenلَمْlam(do) notيَرْتَابُواyartābūdoubtوَجَاهَدُواwajāhadūbut striveبِأَمْوَالِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealthوَأَنْفُسِهِمْwa-anfusihimand their livesفِيfīinسَبِيلِsabīli(the) wayاللَّهِl-lahi(of) AllahأُولَئِكَulāikaThoseهُمُhumu[they]الصَّادِقُونَl-ṣādiqūna(are) the truthful
16. 16قُلْqulSayأَتُعَلِّمُونَatuʿallimūnaWill you acquaintاللَّهَl-lahaAllahبِدِينِكُمْbidīnikumwith your religionوَاللَّهُwal-lahuwhile Allahيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknowsمَاmāwhatفِيfī(is) inالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَمَاwamāand whatفِيfī(is) inالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَاللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahبِكُلِّbikulliof everyشَيْءٍshayinthingعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
17. 17يَمُنُّونَyamunnūnaThey consider (it) a favorعَلَيْكَʿalaykato youأَنْanthatأَسْلَمُواaslamūthey have accepted IslamقُلْqulSayلَاlā(Do) notتَمُنُّواtamunnūconsider a favorعَلَيَّʿalayyato meإِسْلَامَكُمْis'lāmakumyour IslamبَلِbaliNayاللَّهُl-lahuAllahيَمُنُّyamunnuhas conferred a favorعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon youأَنْanthatهَدَاكُمْhadākumHe has guided youلِلْإِيمَانِlil'īmānito the faithإِنْinifكُنْتُمْkuntumyou areصَادِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful
18. 18إِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknowsغَيْبَghayba(the) unseenالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَالْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَاللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahبَصِيرٌbaṣīrun(is) All-Seerبِمَاbimāof whatتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do
