بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah 31 — Luqman

  1. 1الٓمٓalif-lam-meemAlif Lam Mim
  2. 2تِلْكَtil'kaTheseءَايَاتُāyātu(are) Versesالْكِتَابِl-kitābi(of) the Bookالْحَكِيمِl-ḥakīmithe Wise
  3. 3هُدًىhudanA guidanceوَرَحْمَةًwaraḥmatanand a mercyلِلْمُحْسِنِينَlil'muḥ'sinīnafor the good-doers
  4. 4الَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيُقِيمُونَyuqīmūnaestablishالصَّلَوةَl-ṣalatathe prayerوَيُؤْتُونَwayu'tūnaand giveالزَّكَوةَl-zakatazakahوَهُمْwahumand theyبِالْءَاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafterهُمْhum[they]يُوقِنُونَyūqinūnabelieve firmly
  5. 5أُولَئِكَulāikaThoseعَلَىʿalā(are) onهُدًىhudanguidanceمِنْminfromرَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordوَأُولَئِكَwa-ulāikaand thoseهُمُhumu[they]الْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna(are) the successful
  6. 6وَمِنَwaminaAnd ofالنَّاسِl-nāsithe mankindمَنْman(is he) whoيَشْتَرِيyashtarīpurchasesلَهْوَlahwaidle talesالْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthiidle talesلِيُضِلَّliyuḍillato misleadعَنْʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) pathاللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahبِغَيْرِbighayriwithoutعِلْمٍʿil'minknowledgeوَيَتَّخِذَهَاwayattakhidhahāand takes itهُزُوًاhuzuwan(in) ridiculeأُولَئِكَulāikaThoseلَهُمْlahumfor themعَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishmentمُهِينٌmuhīnunhumiliating
  7. 7وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenتُتْلَىtut'lāare recitedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himءَايَاتُنَاāyātunāOur Versesوَلَّىwallāhe turns awayمُسْتَكْبِرًاmus'takbiranarrogantlyكَأَنْka-anas ifلَمْlamnotيَسْمَعْهَاyasmaʿhāhe (had) heard themكَأَنَّka-annaas ifفِيinأُذُنَيْهِudhunayhihis earsوَقْرًاwaqran(is) deafnessفَبَشِّرْهُfabashir'huSo give him tidingsبِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinof a punishmentأَلِيمٍalīminpainful
  8. 8إِنَّinnaIndeedالَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواāmanūbelieveوَعَمِلُواwaʿamilūand doالصَّالِحَاتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deedsلَهُمْlahumfor themجَنَّاتُjannātu(are) Gardensالنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) Delight
  9. 9خَالِدِينَkhālidīna(To) abide foreverفِيهَاfīhāin itوَعْدَwaʿda(The) Promise of Allahاللَّهِl-lahi(The) Promise of Allahحَقًّاḥaqqan(is) trueوَهُوَwahuwaAnd Heالْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu(is) the All-Mightyالْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise
  10. 10خَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensبِغَيْرِbighayriwithoutعَمَدٍʿamadinpillarsتَرَوْنَهَاtarawnahāthat you seeوَأَلْقَىwa-alqāand has castفِيinالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthرَوَاسِيَrawāsiyafirm mountainsأَنْanlestتَمِيدَtamīdait (might) shakeبِكُمْbikumwith youوَبَثَّwabathaand He dispersedفِيهَاfīhāin itمِنْminfromكُلِّkullieveryدَابَّةٍdābbatincreatureوَأَنْزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd We sent downمِنَminafromالسَّمَاءِl-samāithe skyمَاءًmāanwaterفَأَنْبَتْنَاfa-anbatnāthen We caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinمِنْminofكُلِّkullieveryزَوْجٍzawjinkindكَرِيمٍkarīminnoble
  11. 11هَذَاhādhāThisخَلْقُkhalqu(is the) creationاللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahفَأَرُونِيfa-arūnīSo show Meمَاذَاmādhāwhatخَلَقَkhalaqahave createdالَّذِينَalladhīnathoseمِنْminbesides Himدُونِهِdūnihibesides HimبَلِbaliNayالظَّالِمُونَl-ẓālimūnathe wrongdoersفِي(are) inضَلَالٍḍalālinerrorمُبِينٍmubīninclear
  12. 12وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verilyءَاتَيْنَاātaynāWe gaveلُقْمَانَluq'mānaLuqmanالْحِكْمَةَl-ḥik'matathe wisdomأَنِanithatاشْكُرْush'kurBe gratefulلِلَّهِlillahito AllahوَمَنْwamanAnd whoeverيَشْكُرْyashkur(is) gratefulفَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāthen onlyيَشْكُرُyashkuruhe is gratefulلِنَفْسِهِlinafsihifor himselfوَمَنْwamanAnd whoeverكَفَرَkafara(is) ungratefulفَإِنَّfa-innathen indeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahغَنِيٌّghaniyyun(is) Free of needحَمِيدٌḥamīdunPraiseworthy
  13. 13وَإِذْwa-idhAnd whenقَالَqālasaidلُقْمَانُluq'mānuLuqmanلِابْنِهِli-ib'nihito his sonوَهُوَwahuwawhile heيَعِظُهُyaʿiẓuhu(was) instructing himيَابُنَيَّyābunayyaO my son!لَا(Do) notتُشْرِكْtush'rikassociate partnersبِاللَّهِbil-lahiwith AllahإِنَّinnaIndeedالشِّرْكَl-shir'kaassociating partnersلَظُلْمٌlaẓul'mun(is) surely an injusticeعَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat
  14. 14وَوَصَّيْنَاwawaṣṣaynāAnd We have enjoinedالْإِنْسَانَl-insāna(upon) manبِوَالِدَيْهِbiwālidayhifor his parentsحَمَلَتْهُḥamalathucarried himأُمُّهُummuhuhis motherوَهْنًاwahnan(in) weaknessعَلَىʿalāuponوَهْنٍwahninweaknessوَفِصَالُهُwafiṣāluhuand his weaningفِي(is) inعَامَيْنِʿāmaynitwo yearsأَنِanithatاشْكُرْush'kurBe gratefulلِيto Meوَلِوَالِدَيْكَwaliwālidaykaand to your parentsإِلَيَّilayyatowards Meالْمَصِيرُl-maṣīru(is) the destination
  15. 15وَإِنْwa-inBut ifجَاهَدَاكَjāhadākathey strive against youعَلَىʿalāonأَنْanthatتُشْرِكَtush'rikayou associate partnersبِيwith Meمَاwhatلَيْسَlaysanotلَكَlakayou haveبِهِbihiof itعِلْمٌʿil'munany knowledgeفَلَاfalāthen (do) notتُطِعْهُمَاtuṭiʿ'humāobey both of themوَصَاحِبْهُمَاwaṣāḥib'humāBut accompany themفِيinالدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe worldمَعْرُوفًاmaʿrūfan(with) kindnessوَاتَّبِعْwa-ittabiʿand followسَبِيلَsabīla(the) pathمَنْman(of him) whoأَنَابَanābaturnsإِلَيَّilayyato MeثُمَّthummaThenإِلَيَّilayyatowards Meمَرْجِعُكُمْmarjiʿukum(is) your returnفَأُنَبِّئُكُمْfa-unabbi-ukumthen I will inform youبِمَاbimāof whatكُنْتُمْkuntumyou used (to)تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnado
  16. 16يَابُنَيَّyābunayyaO my sonإِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed itإِنْinifتَكُtakuit beمِثْقَالَmith'qāla(the) weightحَبَّةٍḥabbatin(of) a grainمِنْminofخَرْدَلٍkhardalina mustard seedفَتَكُنْfatakunand it beفِيinصَخْرَةٍṣakhratina rockأَوْaworفِيinالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensأَوْaworفِيinالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthيَأْتِyatiAllah will bring it forthبِهَاbihāAllah will bring it forthاللَّهُl-lahuAllah will bring it forthإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَطِيفٌlaṭīfun(is) All-SubtleخَبِيرٌkhabīrunAll-Aware
  17. 17يَابُنَيَّyābunayyaO my sonأَقِمِaqimiEstablishالصَّلَوةَl-ṣalatathe prayerوَأْمُرْwamurand enjoinبِالْمَعْرُوفِbil-maʿrūfi[with] the rightوَانْهَwa-in'haand forbidعَنِʿanifromالْمُنْكَرِl-munkarithe wrongوَاصْبِرْwa-iṣ'birand be patientعَلَىʿalāoverمَاwhatأَصَابَكَaṣābakabefalls youإِنَّinnaIndeedذَلِكَdhālikathatمِنْmin(is) ofعَزْمِʿazmithe matters requiring determinationالْأُمُورِl-umūrithe matters requiring determination
  18. 18وَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتُصَعِّرْtuṣaʿʿirturnخَدَّكَkhaddakayour cheekلِلنَّاسِlilnnāsifrom menوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَمْشِtamshiwalkفِيinالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthمَرَحًاmaraḥanexultantlyإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَا(does) notيُحِبُّyuḥibbulikeكُلَّkullaeveryمُخْتَالٍmukh'tālinself-conceitedفَخُورٍfakhūrinboaster
  19. 19وَاقْصِدْwa-iq'ṣidAnd be moderateفِيinمَشْيِكَmashyikayour paceوَاغْضُضْwa-ugh'ḍuḍand lowerمِنْmin[of]صَوْتِكَṣawtikayour voiceإِنَّinnaIndeedأَنْكَرَankara(the) harshestالْأَصْوَاتِl-aṣwāti(of all) soundsلَصَوْتُlaṣawtu(is) surely (the) voiceالْحَمِيرِl-ḥamīri(of) the donkeys
  20. 20أَلَمْalamDo notتَرَوْاtarawyou seeأَنَّannathatاللَّهَl-lahaAllahسَخَّرَsakharahas subjectedلَكُمْlakumto youمَاwhateverفِي(is) inالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَمَاwamāand whateverفِي(is) inالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَأَسْبَغَwa-asbaghaand amply bestowedعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon youنِعَمَهُniʿamahuHis Bountiesظَاهِرَةًẓāhiratanapparentوَبَاطِنَةًwabāṭinatanand hiddenوَمِنَwaminaBut ofالنَّاسِl-nāsithe peopleمَنْman(is he) whoيُجَادِلُyujādiludisputesفِيaboutاللَّهِl-lahiAllahبِغَيْرِbighayriwithoutعِلْمٍʿil'minknowledgeوَلَاwalāand notهُدًىhudanguidanceوَلَاwalāand notكِتَابٍkitābina bookمُنِيرٍmunīrinenlightening
  21. 21وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقِيلَqīlait is saidلَهُمُlahumuto themاتَّبِعُواittabiʿūFollowمَاwhatأَنْزَلَanzalaAllah (has) revealedاللَّهُl-lahuAllah (has) revealedقَالُواqālūthey sayبَلْbalNayنَتَّبِعُnattabiʿuwe will followمَاwhatوَجَدْنَاwajadnāwe foundعَلَيْهِʿalayhion itءَابَاءَنَاābāanāour forefathersأَوَلَوْawalawEven ifكَانَkānaShaitaan wasالشَّيْطَانُl-shayṭānuShaitaan wasيَدْعُوهُمْyadʿūhum(to) call themإِلَىilātoعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishmentالسَّعِيرِl-saʿīri(of) the Blaze
  22. 22وَمَنْwamanAnd whoeverيُسْلِمْyus'limsubmitsوَجْهَهُwajhahuhis faceإِلَىilātoاللَّهِl-lahiAllahوَهُوَwahuwawhile heمُحْسِنٌmuḥ'sinun(is) a good- doerفَقَدِfaqadithen indeedاسْتَمْسَكَis'tamsakahe has graspedبِالْعُرْوَةِbil-ʿur'watithe handholdالْوُثْقَىl-wuth'qāthe most trustworthyوَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd toاللَّهِl-lahiAllahعَاقِبَةُʿāqibatu(is the) endالْأُمُورِl-umūri(of) the matters
  23. 23وَمَنْwamanAnd whoeverكَفَرَkafaradisbelievesفَلَاfalālet notيَحْزُنْكَyaḥzunkagrieve youكُفْرُهُkuf'ruhuhis disbeliefإِلَيْنَاilaynāTo Usمَرْجِعُهُمْmarjiʿuhum(is) their returnفَنُنَبِّئُهُمْfanunabbi-uhumthen We will inform themبِمَاbimāof whatعَمِلُواʿamilūthey didإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) the All-Knowerبِذَاتِbidhātiof whatالصُّدُورِl-ṣudūri(is in) the breasts
  24. 24نُمَتِّعُهُمْnumattiʿuhumWe grant them enjoymentقَلِيلًاqalīlan(for) a littleثُمَّthummathenنَضْطَرُّهُمْnaḍṭarruhumWe will force themإِلَىilātoعَذَابٍʿadhābina punishmentغَلِيظٍghalīẓinsevere
  25. 25وَلَئِنْwala-inAnd ifسَأَلْتَهُمْsa-altahumyou ask themمَنْmanWhoخَلَقَkhalaqacreatedالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَالْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthلَيَقُولُنَّlayaqūlunnaThey will surely sayاللَّهُl-lahuAllahقُلِquliSayالْحَمْدُl-ḥamduAll praisesلِلَّهِlillahi(are) for AllahبَلْbalButأَكْثَرُهُمْaktharuhummost of themلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
  26. 26لِلَّهِlillahiTo Allah (belongs)مَاwhateverفِي(is) inالسَّمَاوَاتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَالْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahهُوَhuwaHeالْغَنِيُّl-ghaniyu(is) Free of needالْحَمِيدُl-ḥamīduthe Praiseworthy
  27. 27وَلَوْwalawAnd ifأَنَّمَاannamāwhateverفِي(is) inالْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthمِنْminofشَجَرَةٍshajaratin(the) treesأَقْلَامٌaqlāmun(were) pensوَالْبَحْرُwal-baḥruand the seaيَمُدُّهُyamudduhu(to) add to itمِنْminafter itبَعْدِهِbaʿdihiafter itسَبْعَةُsabʿatusevenأَبْحُرٍabḥurinseasمَاnotنَفِدَتْnafidatwould be exhaustedكَلِمَاتُkalimātu(the) Wordsاللَّهِl-lahi(of) AllahإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahعَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-MightyحَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise
  28. 28مَاNotخَلْقُكُمْkhalqukum(is) your creationوَلَاwalāand notبَعْثُكُمْbaʿthukumyour resurrectionإِلَّاillābutكَنَفْسٍkanafsinas a soulوَاحِدَةٍwāḥidatinsingleإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahسَمِيعٌsamīʿun(is) All-HearerبَصِيرٌbaṣīrunAll-Seer
  29. 29أَلَمْalamDo notتَرَtarayou seeأَنَّannathatاللَّهَl-lahaAllahيُولِجُyūlijucauses to enterاللَّيْلَal-laylathe nightفِيintoالنَّهَارِl-nahārithe dayوَيُولِجُwayūlijuand causes to enterالنَّهَارَl-nahārathe dayفِيintoاللَّيْلِal-laylithe nightوَسَخَّرَwasakharaand has subjectedالشَّمْسَl-shamsathe sunوَالْقَمَرَwal-qamaraand the moonكُلٌّkulluneachيَجْرِيyajrīmovingإِلَىilāforأَجَلٍajalina termمُسَمًّىmusammanappointedوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatاللَّهَl-lahaAllahبِمَاbimāof whatتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou doخَبِيرٌkhabīrun(is) All-Aware
  30. 30ذَلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّbi-anna(is) becauseاللَّهَl-lahaAllahهُوَhuwaHeالْحَقُّl-ḥaqu(is) the Truthوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatمَاwhatيَدْعُونَyadʿūnathey callمِنْminbesides Himدُونِهِdūnihibesides Himالْبَاطِلُl-bāṭilu(is) [the] falsehoodوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatاللَّهَl-lahaAllahهُوَhuwaHeالْعَلِيُّl-ʿaliyu(is) the Most Highالْكَبِيرُl-kabīruthe Most Great
  31. 31أَلَمْalamDo notتَرَtarayou seeأَنَّannathatالْفُلْكَl-ful'kathe shipsتَجْرِيtajrīsailفِيthroughالْبَحْرِl-baḥrithe seaبِنِعْمَتِbiniʿ'matiby (the) Graceاللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahلِيُرِيَكُمْliyuriyakumthat He may show youمِنْminofءَايَاتِهِāyātihiHis SignsإِنَّinnaIndeedفِيinذَلِكَdhālikathatلَءَايَاتٍlaāyātinsurely (are) Signsلِكُلِّlikullifor everyoneصَبَّارٍṣabbārin(who is) patientشَكُورٍshakūringrateful
  32. 32وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenغَشِيَهُمْghashiyahumcovers themمَوْجٌmawjuna waveكَالظُّلَلِkal-ẓulalilike canopiesدَعَوُاdaʿawūthey callاللَّهَl-lahaAllahمُخْلِصِينَmukh'liṣīna(being) sincereلَهُlahuto Himالدِّينَl-dīna(in) religionفَلَمَّاfalammāBut whenنَجَّاهُمْnajjāhumHe delivers themإِلَىilātoالْبَرِّl-barithe landفَمِنْهُمْfamin'humthen among themمُقْتَصِدٌmuq'taṣidun(some are) moderateوَمَاwamāAnd notيَجْحَدُyajḥadudenyبِءَايَاتِنَاbiāyātināOur Signsإِلَّاillāexceptكُلُّkullueveryخَتَّارٍkhattārintraitorكَفُورٍkafūrinungrateful
  33. 33يَاأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOالنَّاسُl-nāsumankindاتَّقُواittaqūFearرَبَّكُمْrabbakumyour Lordوَاخْشَوْاwa-ikh'shawand fearيَوْمًاyawmana Dayلَاnotيَجْزِيyajzīcan availوَالِدٌwāliduna fatherعَنْʿan[for]وَلَدِهِwaladihihis sonوَلَاwalāand notمَوْلُودٌmawlūduna sonهُوَhuwaheجَازٍjāzin(can) availعَنْʿan[for]وَالِدِهِwālidihihis fatherشَيْئًاshayananythingإِنَّinnaIndeedوَعْدَwaʿda(the) Promiseاللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahحَقٌّḥaqqun(is) Trueفَلَاfalāso let not deceive youتَغُرَّنَّكُمُtaghurrannakumuso let not deceive youالْحَيَوةُl-ḥayatuthe lifeالدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the worldوَلَاwalāand let not deceive youيَغُرَّنَّكُمْyaghurrannakumand let not deceive youبِاللَّهِbil-lahiabout Allahالْغَرُورُl-gharūruthe deceiver
  34. 34إِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahعِنْدَهُʿindahuwith Himعِلْمُʿil'mu(is the) knowledgeالسَّاعَةِl-sāʿati(of) the Hourوَيُنَزِّلُwayunazziluand He sends downالْغَيْثَl-ghaythathe rainوَيَعْلَمُwayaʿlamuand knowsمَاwhatفِي(is) inالْأَرْحَامِl-arḥāmithe wombsوَمَاwamāAnd notتَدْرِيtadrīknowsنَفْسٌnafsunany soulمَاذَاmādhāwhatتَكْسِبُtaksibuit will earnغَدًاghadantomorrowوَمَاwamāand notتَدْرِيtadrīknowsنَفْسٌnafsunany soulبِأَيِّbi-ayyiin whatأَرْضٍarḍinlandتَمُوتُtamūtuit will dieإِنَّinnaIndeedاللَّهَl-lahaAllahعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-KnowerخَبِيرٌkhabīrunAll-Aware
